Skin Concerns A-Z
Our helpful resource for managing skin concerns. This list is not intended as a diagnostic tool, please ask in clinc for individual advice or speak to your doctor if you are worried.
A very common skin condition that affects most people at some point in their lives. It causes spots, oily skin and sometimes skin that's hot or painful to touch.
Treating acne can be frustrating at times, but there are lots of proven ways we can help, including take-home products like our Environ step-up retinoid system. Consistency is very important when managing acne and advanced nutrition supplements like acumax can help address root causes, long-term. In clinic facials can also be a great way to get back in control. Severe acne can sometimes require prescription medication.
Small, flat dark patches on the skin. They vary in size and usually appear on areas exposed to the sun, such as the face, hands, shoulders and arms. They're sometimes also called liver spots or solar lentigines.
Age spots are harmless, but they are a symptom of sun damage.
The best treatment for this concern is prevention. The best place to start is with a high quality sunscreen applied daily, rain or shine. We recommend RAD Antioxidant Sun Cream, produced by the Environ Skin Care Institute and available in clinic.
Vitamin C is also a proven way to brighten skin and is available in clinic.
Sun Spots can sometimes be visibly reduced with advanced electrolysis.
Harmless small, dark bumps or spots that develop in patients with darker skin. Sometimes they may extend to the neck and chest. They can be treated effectively in clinic with advanced electrolysis.
Another very common skin condition that can make the skin look and feel rough, itchy, flaky or scaly and can be caused by any number of things, including cold or dry weather, sun damage, and even harsh soaps.
There is a lot you can do at home to help with dry skin, like using high quality moisturisers and sun protection. Environ's step-up moisturiser system can be a very effective program for improving skin moisture long term. Advanced Nutrition's Omega 3 + 6 are also very valuable supplements for stable skin.
For more immediate relief, Environ's moisture boost facial can be a great help.
There are many differing forms of Exzema, but it most commonly presents as itchy areas of skin that become dry, cracked, scaly, or thickened over time. Affected areas can blister or bleed and cause surrounding skin to change colour.
There is currently no cure for many forms of eczema, but it can be effectively managed with moisturising creams and/or steroid creams. Supplements containing Omega 3 + 6, produced by the Advanced Nutrition Programme can also help your skin stay hydrated, long-term.
A common condition that makes some areas of the skin darker than others. Extra melanin creates spots or patches that look brown, black, gray, red or pink. The areas are not painful or itchy, but they can make people self-conscious. Their causes are not always clear but may be related to hormones, aggressive skin treatment, or sun damage. They often fade over time.
With hyper-pigmentation, it is very important to take special care in the sun and use spf daily. Vitamin C cream can also be effective at brightening these areas. Spf and Vit C creams are available in clinic.
Psoriasis is a common skin condition that causes itchy and painful patches of dry, flaky skin. It cannot be cured, but there are treatments to help manage symptoms.
High quality moisturising creams can be very effective tools for both reducing the flared appearance and irritation of skin. Advanced Nutrition Omega 3 + 6 supplements can also be very beneficial.
Oily skin (seborrhea) is a common concern that occurs when sebaceous glands produce excessive amounts of sebum giving the appearance of shiny and greasy skin. There are many factors that can contribute to this concern, including genetics, age, climate, and, of course, skincare.
Although it may seem counter-intuitive, it is important to moisturise oily skin. Environ's step-up system can be very effective for stabilising skin and is available in clinic. Like enlarged pores, it may be benificial to get specific advice in person.
Large or visible pores are not really a skin condition at all. They are often the result of a perfectly normal skin texture caused by a combination of genetics, increased sebum production, hair follicle size, and age. They can be exacerbated by comodogenic (clogging) makeup, acne, and sun damage.
Treatment for enlarged pores can involve deep-cleansing facials or simple adjustments to your skincare. Because they can have so many contributing factors, it may be beneficial to ask for specific advice in clinic.
Moles are small, coloured spots on the skin. Most people have them and they're usually nothing to worry about unless they change size, shape or colour. It is always best to check with your GP if you're concerned. If we suspect a mole may be malignant, we will refer you to your GP.
Unwanted moles can often be reduced in clinic with advanced electrolysis.
Milia (or Milk spots) are very small, raised, pearly-white or yellowish bumps on the skin. They are most often seen around the cheeks, nose, eyes and eyelids, but they can occur anywhere on the body. They're common in newborn babies, but tend to stick around longer in adults. They are harmless, but many adults choose to get them removed. Their appearance often gets them confused with whiteheads, but they are not a form of acne.
Milia can be effectively treated in clinic with advanced electrolysis.
Also called Campbell de Morgan spots, these small, pinhead-like lesions appear most commonly on your torso, arms and legs. They are harmless and can be easily removed in clinic with advanced electrolysis.
Rosacea is a long-term skin condition that mainly affects the face. It's more common in women and people with lighter skin, but symptoms can be worse in men. Symptoms can including red flushes across the face and a burning sensation when applying water or skincare to affected areas.
It is important to use a high quality sunscreen daily and skin supplements containing Omega 3 + 6 can be helpful. Spf and Omega supplements are available in clinic.
Sensitive skin is a negative reaction to certain cosmetic or personal care products and environmental changes. Common symptoms include itchiness, dryness and skin discoloration.
Topical retinoids can be really helpful for improving the stability of your skin and reducing sensitive reactions. If started abruptly or used inconsistently though, retinoids can make sensitive skin worse. The Environ Skin Care Institute's step-up system is a great gradual programme to follow to minimise reactions.
Warts and verrucas are small lumps on the skin that most people have at some point in their life. They usually go away on their own but may take months or even years.
There are many 'remedies' for warts and verrucas that can have varying results. The most effective treatment for both is advanced electrolysis, which can be performed in clinic.
Sebaceous hyperplasia is a harmless, common skin condition that becomes more common with age. Small bumps appear, usually on the face, when your sebaceous oil glands make too much oil that gets trapped under your skin.
Sebaceous hyperplasia can be effectively treated in clinic with advanced electrolysis.
Syringomas are a cluster of bumps on your skin that are either yellow or the same color as your natural skin tone. These bumps form because your sweat glands (eccrine glands) are overworking.
Syringomas can be effectively treated in clinic with advanced electrolysis.
A xanthelasma is a harmless yellow bump on or near your eyelid skin. A type of xanthoma, or cholesterol deposit, a xanthelasma can be soft, chalky or semi-solid. Xanthelasmas can be a sign of thyroid problems, diabetes, and high cholestrol.
Xanthelasmas can be treated with cryotherapy or surgery, but these can cause scarring and hyperpigmentations. They are most effectively treated in clinc with advanced electrolysis.
Scars and stretch marks are very common. They're harmless and often get less visible over time. They can be caused by any number of things.
Improving your skin health from the inside using skin supplements may help the natural fading process. Environ's retinol based body oil can also be very effective for reducing the visibility of scarring and stretch marks and improving skin texture.
Skin tags are soft, skin-coloured growths on the skin. They can look like they're hanging off the skin. They do not usually hurt and are usually harmless. They often grow where your skin rubs together or where there are folds in your skin.
Skin tags can be effectively treated with advanced electrolysis in clinic. Once a skin tag is removed it does not usually return. Skin tags are sometimes treated by freezing them by various methods. We do not recommend this method as it can cause hyper-pigmentation and scarring.
Wrinkles and fine lines are lines or creases that form on the skin due to aging, ultraviolet (UV) light exposure, genes, and repetitive facial expressions. They are a very normal part of life, but they do bother many people.
There are many treatment options with varying success rates. One of the most proven and underutilised options is Vitamin A, or retinoid solutions. Environ's step-up system is a great place to start and is available in clinic. Advanced Nutrition supplements and clinic facials can also be helpful.
Seborrhoeic keratoses are also known as seborrhoeic warts and basal cell papillomas. They are very common harmless often brown/black, growths on the skin caused by a build-up of skin cells. In the UK more than half the men and more than a third of women have at least one.
Whilst we don't know what causes them, sunlight appears to be a risk factor, so a daily sunscreen is a great prevention. They can often be visibly reduced with advanced electrolysis in clinic.
Hair is a very normal and natural part of everyday life for almost all of us. Hair can be unwanted for many different reasons for different people. There are also many factors that may affect suitable treatment options, from hair location, to volume of hair, or even skin colour. We offer IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) as a semi-permanent treatment option and electrolysis hair removal as a permanent hair removal treatment. Both of these treatment options are safe and effective when performed by a qualified and experienced practitioner.
Thread veins are small, dilated blood vessels that form near the skin’s surface. They form thin, red or purple lines or web-like patterns that resemble threads or spider webs. While thread veins can appear anywhere on the body, they are most typically observed on the legs, face (especially the cheeks and nose).
Thread veins can be effectively treated in clinic with advanced electrolysis.
