How we work with the NHS.
The Malvern is a registered NHS provider for gender affirming electrolysis hair removal. In practice, this means that patients can be referred to us by a gender clinic (via the GDNRSS / NHS Arden & GEM Commissioning Support Unit). In England, the NHS provides funding for 16 hours of electrolysis facial hair removal. If your surgeon refers you for Pre-surgical hair removal, this is funded until complete. We also provide continued treatment privately, should you require it.
This article will briefly explain the referral process but it's mostly for giving you an idea of what treatment might look like at the clinic. For detailed information and advice on referrals it's best to get in contact with your gender clinic. TransActual's permanent hair removal guide may be useful if you're not sure where to start.
The Referral Process.
The referral process and where it comes into your treatment may look different for everyone. This is the path most clients take to access NHS treatment at The Malvern.
Gender clinic referral
Your Gender Clinic makes a referral to the Gender Dysphoria National Referral Support Service (GDNRSS).
GDNRSS / Arden & GEM CSU
The GDNRSS processes your referral and sends you a list of providers, of which we are one.
Provider selection / getting in touch
At this stage, you can ask the GDNRSS to select The Malvern as your clinic. You can also reach out to us and any providers on the list to check availability / waiting lists, and to arrange a consultation before you make your selection.
Approval and funding
Once you have informed the GDNRSS of your selection, they will let us know that your treatment has been approved and provide you with our contact information to arrange your first appointment.
What treatment looks like at The Malvern.
We provide specialised permanent hair removal services both privately and via the NHS. Under the NHS, this means Electrolysis hair removal, but we also provide private Laser / IPL services.
What is Electrolysis?
Electrolysis is the only medically approved, proven safe method of permanent hair removal1. It is achieved by passing a small electric current through a fine probe to the hair root. When performed by a registered, skilled, and experienced practitioner, electrolysis permanently and irreversibly stops hair growth. It may sound a little scary, but electrolysis has been recognised as safe and effective for over 100 years.2 Nevertheless, it is a highly skilled procedure that should only be carried out by a trained professional, registered with the British Association & Institute of Electrolysis.
Electrolysis at The Malvern.
All our electrolysis is carried out by our lead practitioner, Yvette Guthrie, who has been registered with the British Institute & Association of Electrolysis (BIAE) for over 35 years. Yvette has been a board member at the institute since 2024, where she has overseen the training and examinination of many new practitioners. Yvette has been an NHS provider for over ten years, and has provided private gender affirming electrolysis for nearly 20 years. You can read more about Yvette and her longstanding dedication to client care, here. If you have any questions or worries about treatment, you can ask Yvette directly at enquiries@themalvern.co.uk.
